What is Domicile Certificate & How to Apply it online?

Domicile Certificate is a certificate issued by every state government, that you reside in a particular state. It is also known as residence certificate. It is not restricted to cast and creed. What is a domicile certificate?

How to apply for a domicile certificate?

Domicile certificate is not issued by the central government, it is issued by state governments. So the process can vary from state to state but the documents are almost similar.

Documents Required to apply for domicile certificate:

  • Affidavit
  • Photocopy of voters ID card
  • Photocopy of Ration card
  • Aadhar card
  • Photocopy of birth certificate
  • Photocopy of educational accomplishment

Common residence proof needed:

  • Adhaar card
  • Electricity bill
  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • Rent receipts

Why Domicile Certificate is Required?

Eligibility Criteria 

Anyone who had resided in a state or if their parents had resided in a state for 4 years can go for a domicile certificate. The policies to apply for this certificate may differ from state to state. Policies of some metropolitan State are:

Rajasthan: The above mentioned criteria shifts to 10 years. For females one needs to marry someone from rajasthan.

Maharashtra: One needs to be a resident of Maharashtra for 15 years if you want to have a domicile certificate. 

Delhi : The person needs to be a resident for 3 years.

Bangalore: The eligibility criteria shifts to 6 years.

Some common eligibility criteria:

  • Aspirants must own a property in the state like a house or some acres of land.
  • One name should be on the voter list.
  • Female applicants’ spouses must be the resident of the state of which domicile certificate they want.

How to apply for this certificate online?

Applying for a domicile certificate online is much easier and procedure is little similar to migration certificate. If you want to apply then you need to visit the states portal. Step #1:  Log in to online portal of any state.

Step #2: There is an option to apply for certificate, click on that link.

Step #3:  Register in the portal of you have already signed up than put your username and password

Step #4:  Download the application form and fill the form you can keep updating of your form e-Mitra portal.

Like this every state government has a different website.

Offline Procedure to get certificate:

Some of you may find online procedures quite more complicated than you can opt for offline procedures. One can apply for domicile in the following offices:

  • Tahsildar office
  • Sub- divisional magistrate
  • Revenue department
  • SDM office
  • Collector office etc.

The applicant then has to fill a request letter with the required documents mentioned above. Then the office where you have applied will issue the certificate.

Apart from all the documents one needs to give some information about themselves which follows:

  • Your name
  • Birth place
  • Birth date
  • Residential address
  • Ones nationality
